Table Selection
it doesn't matter how good a poker player you are if your opponents are better. if you want to be a winner at the end of the day you have to have an edge on the other players. selecting a favorable table to play at is thus a very important part of your poker strategy.
there are many things to look for when choosing a poker table, factors that indicate a loose game with week players. if you're playing online most of the information you need can be found in the lobby. the percentage of players who see the flop is listed here as well as the average pot size. the more players that see the flop the better, at least 35 % are a good thumb rule. and of course you would want the average pot size to be as high as possible; 12 times the small blind should be your minimum standard. when these criteria are met a solid poker player can make a good profit.
if you notice one or two particularly week players at a table, you should try to be seated to the left of them for maximum positional advantage. but always keep in mind that the set up of online poker tables changes rapidly. be observant and make sure that the circumstances are beneficial at all times. if they're not you'd be wisest to switch to another table.
when you're playing live you have to gather most of the information you need yourself. study the action at the tables and decide whether to play or not. if you're playing at a table where you're not completely comfortable you should ask the floor manager to be seated elsewhere.
